It is essential that urine cytology should be performed on freshly voided urine, prefereably not an early morning sample as the cells will have been lying in the urine for hours, rapidly degenerating. A mid morning sample is most useful. Three specimens should be sent on consecutive days.
If the patient is the collector. Please ensure it is stated on the request form with the date and time the sample was collected
Add equal volumes of 50% alcohol if delay in transportation is anticipated.
A patient may keep the sample in the fridge until delivered to the hospital/ laboratory.
