Pre-albumin migrates as a 1:1 complex with retinol binding protein (preventing filtration of RBP). Pre-albumin is often used as a marker of protein status due to the short half life, high tryptophan content and high proportion of essential amino acids. Produced by the liver and is a negative acute phase protein. Synthesis is increased by glucocorticoids, androgens and NSAIDS, including aspirin
Low levels may be due to:
Protein malnutrition
Inflammation
Liver disease
Changed from Beckman Image assay to Roche assay on 21 December 2016
