Specimen Collection and Transport Protocols

Blood must be collected carefully as activated samples invalidate results.

Adult Specimen

2.7 mL sodium citrate tube (light blue)

Paediatric Specimen

It is preferable to collect an 2.7 mL sodium citrate tube (light blue) however test can be performed on 1.8ml paediatric coag tube

Sample Delivery to Lab

Must be received in the Laboratory within 2 hours of collection. Do not send specimen via Lamson pneumatic tube system. Please walk specimen to laboratory

Aliquot instructions

2.7 mL sodium citrate tube (light blue) - unspun

Aliquot Transport

PFA must be sent directly to Waikato Hospital. Sample is unsuitable for testing after 4 hours.
