Specimen Collection and Transport Protocols

Culture of urine is no longer considered necessary when investigating pulmonary TB, as it does not lead to an increase in the number of cases detected, or decrease time to detection.

Sample: sputum (early morning sample x3 collected on different days), bronchial washings, early morning urine (EMU, full void x3 collected on different days), faeces (immunocompromised patients for MAIC), tissue, aspirate, CSF, blood and bone marrow **

Laboratory Turnaround Time

AFB microscopy 24 hrs (batched daily Mon – Fri) or urgently by request. Culture 2 - 8 weeks. All positive microscopy and cultures are notified by phone / HL7 / Fax

Method

AFB microscopy, culture: solid media and broth continuous monitoring system.
