Iron remains elevated for up to 2 weeks following iron infusion and ferritin for up to 3 months. 

For Ferritin results > 500 ng/mL - Ferritin results may vary significantly between laboratories.

Patients being serially monitored for iron overload should have Ferritin levels measured by the same laboratory.

Serum ferritin values are elevated in the presence of the following conditions and do not reflect actual body iron stores.
- inflammation
- significant tissue destruction liver disease
- malignancies such as acute leukaemia and Hodgkin's disease therapy with iron supplements
