Specimen collection should be prior to antibiotic administration where possible.
Specimen should be collected aseptically into three separate CSF specimen tubes and labelled I, 2 and 3 in order of collection.
Microbiology
Mon - Sun, 24hrs
Microscopy, 1 hour. Culture, 3 days
Microscopy, culture, protein and glucose
Specimens with indicative microscopy will be referred for Virology. Protein / glucose performed on Cobas CCE analyser (Biochemistry).
3mL (A larger volume is preferrable if multiple tests are required. If insufficient for tests requested Clinician will be asked to prioritise.)
