CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells normally reside in the bone marrow where they account for 1-3% of normal mononuclear cells. They can however be mobilised into the peripheral blood after chemotherapy with the administration of hematopoietic growth factor. The CD34+ cells are capable of hematopoietic reconstitution and are preferred alternative to marrow in the autologous transplant setting.
