Measured calcium is adjusted to the mean value of albumin, which is 40 g/L for patients 1 year and older. Mean Albumin levels are lower in younger patients, therefore the calculation is not appropriate for patients < 1 year of age. Adjusted calcium is only an approximation in patients with significantly abnormal albumin or total protein levels.
