Specimen Collection and Transport Protocols

Remove 6 times the volume of the catheter as waste prior to collecting the blood sample from an arterial line.

Adult Specimen

Whole blood (arterial or venous). 1.5 mL collected into a 3 mL heparinised blood gas syringe, capped with filter cap. Remove air immediately after collection by expelling through the filter cap. Mix for 20 seconds. Must be analysed within 30 minutes.

Paediatric Specimen

0.5 mL blood collected into a 1 mL heparinised blood gas syringe, capped with filter cap. Remove air immediately after collection by expelling through the filter cap. Mix for 20 seconds. Must be analysed within 30 minutes.
