Interpretation

HbA1c levels will not reflect average glucose levels if red cell life span is reduced for any reason.

If the CBC is "abnormal", glucose based testing is strongly recommended, especially if screening for diabetes;  a fasting glucose would be appropriate.

Additional Information

If the presence of an abnormal haemoglobin is identified on routine HbA1c testing, the sample will be sent for haemoglobinopathy screening
