Specimen Collection

Pre Testing Requirements Notify laboratory if results are required URGENTLY.Ph: 07 8398646 or 07 8398806 ext 98364**For blood or bone marrow TB testing, request special media from Microbiology lab on Ext 98646
Specimen Collection Protocols Culture of urine is no longer considered necessary when investigating pulmonary TB, as it does not lead to an increase in the number of cases detected, or decrease time to detection.
Patient Specimen Sample: sputum, bronchial washings, EMU, faeces, tissue, aspirate, CSF, fluid scope QC, blood and bone marrow **
Minimum Volume Fluid / urine 50 ml, CSF 1ml, sputum 5 ml
Sample Delivery to Lab Refrigerate if delivery delayed

Test Availability Mon - Fri, 0800 - 1630
Laboratory Testing Time AFB microscopy 24 hrs (batched daily Monday – Friday) or urgently by request. Culture 2 - 8 weeks All positive microscopy and cultures are notified by phone/ HL7/Fax
Method AFB microscopy, culture: solid media and broth continuous monitoring system.
Additional Information

TB PCR (NAAT) is available on request, please refer: Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex DNA

It is important never to miss TB but tests should only be requested in patients where TB is a possible diagnosis or in the screening of risk patients.
